The Museum of Erotica is the first museum of erotic art and culture, where we can see the development of eroticism through different artistic and cultural fields of human beings from an anthropological, archaeological and literary point of view, amongst others..The Museum of Erotica's holdings comprise more than 800 pieces of great historical value showcasing the erotic manifestations of a wide range of cultures, from a ritualistic, religious and recreational point of view, and spanning several periods in our history, from Greece and Rome to the 1920s. In addition, a new permanent exhibition dedicated to the work of the famous Austrian artist Gustav Klimt has recently been inaugurated, where some of his most iconic works can be admired and visitors can learn more about his life and artistic legacy.
Apart from 4,000 m2 of archaeological remains below the square, the monumental ensemble comprises the 11th-century Palau Comtal – the Count's Palace – later to become the Palau Reial Major – the residence of the kings of Catalonia and Aragon –, highlights of which include the Saló del Tinell, or Great Hall, and the 14th-century Chapel of Santa Àgata. The Watchtower of King Martí was added in the 16th century. The Casa Padellàs, a Gothic Renaissance palazzo which was moved to the Plaça del Rei at the beginning of the 20th century, completes the architectural ensemble.
The archaeological site known as the Ciutat del Born; the permanent exhibition on the Barcelona of the year 1700; the exhibition on the Siege of 1714, which will remain at the centre throughout the tricentenary of those events; the programme of regular arts and cultural events held at the centre (language, literature, music, film, puppets, dance, etc.); the series of lectures, interviews and talks, as well as other one-off activities hosted by the venue, all share a common purpose – to preserve the memory of our history in an entertaining, diverse and accessible way.
The Collection of Hearses was created in 1970 and is formed by nineteen original pieces: thirteen funeral carriages, six carriages used in funeral processions, and three motorised vehicles. It is the only collection of its kind in Europe. A valuable artistic and cultural heritage that helps us understand how our forebears carried their dead to the cemetery and how they adapted to the new funeral customs during the period spanning the 19th and most of the 20th centuries. Visitors are taken back to the neoclassic Barcelona of the mid-19th century as a result of complementary virtual information.
The Gaudí House Museum was the home of the architect Antoni Gaudí i Cornet (1852-1926) from 1906 until 1925. It was built as a show house for the Park Güell development scheme and designed by Francesc d'Assís Berenguer i Mestres (1866-1914), the architect's friend and right-hand man.
CaixaForum is housed inside the former textile mill Casaramona, which was designed by the modernista architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The cultural attraction opened in 2002, after a complete refurbishment undertaken by different architects. The Japanese architect, Arata Isozaki, who won Pritzker Prize in 2019 and also designed the Palau Sant Jordi sports arena, was commissioned to design the entrances and lobby for the new building. Located below street level, it is a spacious area with a glass frontage leading into the lobby and large geometric white marble slabs.
The city's museum of objects and design, the Museu del Disseny, is located in the Disseny Hub Barcelona building in Plaça de les Glòries and brings together the collections of the former museums: the Museu de les Arts Decoratives, the Museu de Ceràmica, the Museu Tèxtil i d'Indumentària and the Gabinet de les Arts Gràfiques.
